Guide 02 · Repair

Choose the smallest change that solves the defect.

A repair is not good merely because the output is watertight. It also has to preserve the shape you meant to print.

Choose by intent

How much should the tool be allowed to change?

Small, traceable edits

Preserve first.

Removes exact duplicates, corrects winding, and fills repairable boundary loops. It stops when a safe local fix is not clear.

Decision path

Start conservative. Escalate only when the mesh forces you to.

  1. 01

    Diagnose first

Use safe repair for duplicates, winding, and fillable holes. These changes can be recorded face by face.

  2. 02

    Inspect the result

Use Changes, X-ray, and Cross-section. A green status is a geometry check—not proof of strength or print safety.

  3. 03

    Rebuild only when necessary

Severely open, self-intersecting, or fragmented meshes may need a newly reconstructed surface.

  4. 04

    Read deviation both ways

Rebuilt-to-original measures surface drift. Original-to-rebuilt helps detect source regions that disappeared.

Geometry ≠ engineering

Structural safety is outside the STL.

Fix3DFile does not know the load, material, layer orientation, printer calibration, or environment of the final part.

Units are not stored

Confirm size in your slicer.

STL coordinates have no built-in unit label. The dimension checker warns about suspicious scale but cannot infer intent with certainty.

Original stays available

Download a separate copy.

The tool does not overwrite the source file. Keep the original and compare the repaired output before printing.
